We address the socioeconomic issues related to the marginalized section of society by organizing awareness initiatives, health camps and skill developments classes.
BIRDS envisions a society with prime concerns for human dignity, equity, and peace that seeks harmony with nature.
Empowering rural communities to address their socio-economic problems on their own through skill development trainings and awareness classes.
BIRDS enables and empowers small farmers to have a self-sufficient livelihood. They are trained by BIRDS to cultivate indigenous varieties of organic food products using low-input and renewable resources, to maintain the fertility of soils, and the genetic diversity of production. Totally, 129 farmers got involved in the last five years and are inclined to take up organic farming. BIRDS is planning to train 500 farmers and is making attempts in this regard.
BIRDS runs a residential school at its training center, Vedasandur, conducting classes I to VIII. The school was started six years ago, responding to the problem of child labor and rehabilitating drop-out children. 60 children from low-income families and orphans are admitted every year. We provided free food, accommodation, uniforms, books, and medical care. BIRDS is considering to include more children in this regard.
Groups of school-going children in the villages have organized a green club in the villages of Dindigul (D). They are oriented to promote the local environment through conservation and eco-friendly practices in their daily lives. We have conducted events for tree plantationss and maintained kitchen gardens to avoid plastic and polythene.
Women are trained on social issues and how to develop their villages. More than 200 women are trained every year with capacity building training. The development of perspectives increases their freedom, strengthens their social rights, and contributes to human development.
The SHG initiative aims to empower women and marginalized communities through collective action, financial independence, and community development. Held initial meetings to bring interested individuals together and discuss the purpose and structure of SHGs. Provided training on SHG management, financial literacy, and income-generating activities. Organized skill development workshops in areas such as tailoring, handicrafts, dairy farming, and small-scale business management.
Income generation activities were initiated by SHG women to make women economically independent. BIRDS organized loans for its members through banks and institutions. Nearly 200 members are helped every year. The loans help them attain higher economic standards, with asset creation securing their daily lives.
Considering the miserable conditions of the people, particularly the wage workers who have lost their jobs during the prolonged lockdown, BIRDS made efforts to mitigate their woes through relief activities. We distributed 21000 food packets total in and around Vedasandur. Furthermore, we also distributed food to more than 700 families for 15 days. Raw food materials were distributed to 350 families to meet their needs for one week.
